Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
This is the landmark book that changed the way exceptional families think about their heritage, their wealth, and their legacy to future generations - now revised and expanded. Charles W. Collier, Senior Philanthropic Adviser at Harvard University, hails this as, "A masterpiece. No one is more astute than Jay Hughes about the topics of family wealth and family life."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Care for the Individual, Protect the Family   June 10, 2010
Office Manager (Lakewood, CO)
I have great respect for Hughes' focus on the individual and his view that if individuals are not properly prepared to inherit money, that financial wealth will dissipate. Throughout his book, he comes across as genuinely concerned about the well-being of each of his clients rather than viewing them as customers with big checkbooks. He speaks about the importance of various relationships such as the advisor-family relationship and the aunt-uncle, niece-nephew relationship.

It is clear from Hughes' book that he is dismayed at the way that some advisors approach wealthy clients. They focus on building a structure such as a trusts without considering the people involved in that structure. Hughes points out that if the people are not functioning well, the structure will crumble, and thus the wealth will dissipate.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Perspective and Guidance   November 19, 2009
Daniel H. Boyce
Jay Hughes' words of wisdom are as applicable to the mass affluent as to the very wealthy family. He provides sound, values-based principles to avoid the common phenomenon of "shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves in three generations" in families. I've read and re-read this book, and asked my three adult children to read it. I recommend it highly to anyone wanting to pass more than merely their assets to future generations.

4 out of 5 stars Not easy but worthwhile   July 13, 2009
Dr. Mary Gresham (Atlanta, Ga)
This book is somewhat densely written in occasionally archaic language so it is not an easy read. The material inside is quite well-thought out, however and gives a good structure to assist wealthy families in solving the problems that come with wealth...unmotivated children, lack of purpose, etc. The general idea of seeing a family's resources as not only financial and social but also intellectual and personal..and figuring out how to develop those is a useful frame. Instead of "shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves in 3 generations", you would be more likely to maintain the family's resources if you followed some of the principles in this book. I did not give it 4 stars due to the stilted writing.

5 out of 5 stars Addresses important topics the family's 'traditional' advisors often don't   February 19, 2009
Shellie Peters (Washington, DC)
I agree with my esteemed colleague, Mr. Collier, and would have to highly recommend this book as a guide to thinking deeper about the softer 'issues' that need to be considered and thought through.

4 out of 5 stars Family Wealth   June 21, 2008
David Lively (Columbus, Oh USA)
Family Wealth is an area in small and meduim size business that has lept to the front of issues facing their firms. As the baby-boom generation decides how an when to step aside Family Wealth should be a must read book on the topic of asset protection and family relationship.
